I drove up into Kentucky Hoping to get a little lucky And find the world’s best moonshine still Nowhere else in this great nation Can you find any better distillation Than in these Appalachian Foothills I found a mountain stream a-flowin’ And I knew where is was going The runners had left the tracks of their car I drove up with cash in hand And that moonshining rag tag band Filled my trunk with a case of mason jars I pulled out onto the main road Trying to protect my precious load When I saw blue lights flashing behind me I pulled over onto the shoulder And had a feeling my life was over ‘Cause that trooper was as big as a beast I popped the trunk and he saw my jars And he brought one up to the front of the car He said "son this looks like some illegal stuff" I swore up and down that it was only water But he took a sip and he looked real bothered I spoke up as he was reaching for the cuffs I said praise the Lord He’s done it again He turned my water into moonshine I’m sorry if you don’t believe me But we witnessed a miracle In these hills tonight He called me a blaspheming loser And threw me in the back of his cruiser Off to the jailhouse we went I tried to plead my case But he wouldn’t even look me in the face I guess this is where the next years of my life will be spent I went straight to see the judge I was hoping he wouldn’t hold a grudge If I could only just tell the truth I knew he was gonna hold me libel And I had to put my hand on the Bible What I did next was uncouth I said praise the Lord He’s done it again He turned my water into moonshine I’m sorry if you don’t believe me But we witnessed a miracle In these hills tonight That old judge he cracked a smile I guess he hadn’t laughed like that in a while He just told me I was free to go But he made me leave my moonshine I could tell they were gonna have a good time Once I was long gone on down the road If you ever get up to Kentucky Hoping to get a little lucky You might hear some old folktale Some say it was a sainted miracle Others think it was just satirical And that the truth will one day prevail Praise the Lord He’s done it again He turned my water into moonshine I’m sorry if you don’t believe me But we witnessed a miracle In these hills tonight
