Snow on Mama's Grave

The Snow on Mama's Grave

1st Verse:
The family buried Mama on the 14th of December.
And if there's been a colder winter, they say they can't remember.
But me, I couldn't be there on that cold December day
When they laid her down to rest there on a hillside made of clay.

2nd Verse:
Mama always hoped that each Christmas would be white.
And although it rarely happened, we still hoped that it might.
When I heard that she'd took sick, I feared this one might be her last.
For me to make it home this year was the one thing that she asked.

Chorus:
Christmastime's just not the same
without the ones you love.
There's sadness here below
now that she's with the Lord above.
The family is all thankful to have known the love she gave.
But to me this white Christmas is just the snow on Mama's grave.

3rd Verse:
Well it's been many years since I left my mountain home.
I remember Mama crying as I started off to roam.
I was off to chase a dream that I never really caught.
Turns out sometimes the grass back home was greener than you thought.

4th Verse:
I finally made it home on a snowy Christmas Eve.
the old homeplace seemed different than before I do believe.
I laid a single rose down on the stone that marked her place.
And hoped it would survive the wind that blew against my face.

Chorus:
Christmastime's just not the same
without the ones you love.
There's sadness here below
now that she's with the Lord above.
The family is all thankful to have known the love she gave.
But to me this white Christmas is just the snow on Mama's grave.
