How’s my Belle?
Has Atlanta simmered down?
We just marched into Vicksburg,
Where we’ll hold the Higher ground.
How’s my Mammy?
How’s my little Patty Sue?
Are the peach trees there in blossom?
The magnolia’s all in bloom...
Here in Vicksburg.
Down here in Vicksburg.
It’s been a week now...
Since I’ve found the time to write.
Those damn Yankees crossed the river,
We’ve been giving them a fight.
But the cannon’s crashing...
Could surely tear your heart in two...
Old Man Mississippi’s runnin' red
In gray and blue…
Here in Vicksburg…
{Keep your head down}
{Fade into the background}
{I will pray for you)}
Down here in Vicksburg...
{Do your duty}
{Then come back home to me}
{I'm awaiting you}
But they won’t break us!
I’ll be coming home real soon...
Pemberton has promised that
We’ll have 'em licked by June…
But if I don’t live to see it,
Promise me you’ll tell…
Patty Sue I loved her to…
The moment that I fell.
Here in Vicksburg…
Down here in Vicksburg…
Farewell my Belle,
I’m too weak to hold a pen.
Hunger’s all that’s left here,
As the darkness closes in.
Say a prayer for all these...
Boys in gray and blue!
Live to learn to love each other,
Because we gave our lives for you…
Here in Vicksburg…
{Swing low!}
Sweet chariot…
Comin' for to carry me….
{Home!}
Swing low sweet chariot…
{Keep your head down...}
{Fade into the background...}
(I will pray for you!}
Comin' for to carry me home…
{He's goin' home!}
Swing low…
{Comin' for to carry me?}
Sweet chariot….
{I'm awaiting you!}
Comin' for to carry me…
Home.
