INFLUENCES
From the lofty entendres of Brandon Boyd to the poignant double meanings of John Mayer, from the rhythmic melodic meanderings of Anthony Kiedis to the hook-driven purpose of Rob Thomas, from the scathing lyrical bombshells of Zach de la Rocha to the soothing wave-like flow of Jack Johnson, my lyrical style draws from my heroes but is also my own. The defining characteristic is almost always in lockstep rhyme scheme commonly but not limited to cadence rhymes. Meter and flow are only slightly subordinate to originality and meaning in my lyrical portfolio. I sing songs of uncertainty and love, the uncertainty of love and my fear of uncertainty. I sing songs about the world and songs about myself and songs for both as well. I a song with which I am satisfied on a monthy basis, but judging by the hundreds of song skeletons floating at the back of my skull and lone stanzas at random points in my GSU School of Music binder, I'd say a new idea for a song comes into my head every day or two. I love to say two things with one line, after all, a line extends indefinitely in two directions.

Jessica Lea Mayfield, whose Nonesuch Records debut Tell Me is in stores now, is on the phone from her home in Ohio and we’re having a good laugh over her recent success. It’s beer o’clock on both ends of the phone, the last interview in a long week of talking to complete strangers for the two of us.

Sessions: David Bazan

It was pretty slow. I mean, I played [the songs] on acoustic guitar for a long time, but I didn’t know how to transfer them to the other format. I didn’t want it to be a solo acoustic record. I wanted there to be bells and whistles and full band arrangements even if I didn’t want it necessarily to be electric guitar rock....
