INFLUENCES
Fiona Apple's Album "Shadowboxer" was the first song I'd heard on the radio that I felt was highly original. It made me think, "I can do that too!" Of course my first couple of attempts were somewhat odd and felt out of place. Listening to Jewel and Tori Amos gave me more confidence that expressing myself, events, people and more on a personal level is what would make a song people wanted to listen to. Hopefully, songs people would be moved by as well. Old Christian hymns have always struck me as beautiful, but sometimes too structured for me. I try to write my own in an original way. Really, I try to listen to some of everything and listen for the next chord arrangement that seems to be being used quite a bit and then I try to change it to be more unique.

Jessica Lea Mayfield, whose Nonesuch Records debut Tell Me is in stores now, is on the phone from her home in Ohio and we’re having a good laugh over her recent success. Cadillac Sky
