BRAGGING RIGHTS
ANASTASIA BROWN is executive producer and music supervisor for “Billy: The Early Years,” She is also album producer for the film’s soundtrack, which will be released by Sony BMG on October 6. For the film, Brown secured artists including Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Sara Evans, Brooks & Dunn, Patty Griffin and many more. One of the top power-players in the entertainment industry, Anastasia is the only female music supervisor in Nashville. In the 1990s she was one of just a few female managers in Nashville and, at the age of 26, formed an equal partnership with legendary music mogul Miles Copeland where she worked with artists such as Peter Frampton, Leon Russell, Waylon Jennings, Sting, Junior Brown, John Berry and Keith Urban, whom she helped discover in 1994 then guiding his career during the early years, securing not just one but two major record deals which led to his eventual superstar status. Brown again broke the Nashville mold when she became President of 821 Entertainment Group -- a media, entertainment and technology holding company with thriving divisions in motion picture and television production, music and digital technologies. She and partner Eric Geadelmann, own the only film production company in Nashville of its kind, making movies at the studio level and focusing on the heartland audience. Since launching 821, Brown was hired by Warner Bros. Pictures to supervise the music for “August Rush,” which garnered an Oscar nomination for its Original Song “Raise It Up.” Her additional credits include working with DreamWorks to supervise the music for producer Steven Spielberg’s 4-hour Emmy Award-winning mini-series, “Taken.” As a Hollywood music supervisor for film and TV and record executive producer she has also and will continue to work with actors, producers and artists such as Quentin Tarantino, Robin Williams, John Travolta, Mark Knopfler, John Legend, Johnny Knoxville, Five For Fighting and Terrance Howard, and companies including Miramax, NBC Universal, Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema, New Regency and Universal Pictures. In addition to her behind-the-scene business undertakings, Brown released her first book – Make Me A Star – in April 2008. Published by Thomas Nelson, the book is packed with advice on making it in the music business from Brown and such artists as Reba McEntire, Keith Urban, Kelly Clarkson and Colbie Caillat. She also moved in front of the camera as the straight-shooting judge on “Nashville Star.” Among the media accolades Brown has earned are inclusion on the “25 Most Beautiful People” list, as well as “Top 40 Most Powerful Under 40” and “Women of Influence.” She was one of four women featured in Fitness & Muscle magazine’s “Women of Strength” in September 2007, and was featured in the November 20, 2006 issue of Variety among their “Multitaskers.”

Cadillac Sky

Cadillac Sky should be a lot more tired. It’s early Saturday afternoon at MerleFest and the band–Bryan Simpson, Matt Menefree, Andrew Moritz, Ross Holmes and newest addition David Mayfield–has already logged two performances on the day....

Sessions: David Bazan

It was pretty slow. I mean, I played [the songs] on acoustic guitar for a long time, but I didn’t know how to transfer them to the other format. I didn’t want it to be a solo acoustic record. I wanted there to be bells and whistles and full band arrangements even if I didn’t want it necessarily to be electric guitar rock....

>>

Sessions: Vetiver

“It’s always slightly confounding to me whenever Vetiver is depicted with the same tropes that people have read off of press sheets,” says Andy Cabic. “The same sort of milestones get mentioned but then no one really digs to find out that there are those other things going on.”

Behind The Song: “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell sang, it has been remarked, like lovers, although they weren’t. Similarly, Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, the team behind one of Marvin and Tammi’s most enduring hits, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing,” wrote as if under the influence of amatory forces; even if, in the spring of 1968,
