BIOGRAPHY
Alex Petrounov is a songwriter working out of Nashville. His catalog nears 250 songs. His work has been played nationally on TV and radio (ABC, Travel Channel, Spike, etc.) and internationally (England, Germany, Australia, Czech Republic, etc.).

Alex has written for many up and coming independent artists. He has also co-written with songwriting giants such as Steven Sater (Spring Awakening, Duncan Sheik) and Robert Ellis Orrall (Lindsey Lohan, Rachel Lampa). He has worked with producers such as Drew and Shannon (Jonny Lang, India Arie, Eric Benet), Ken Coomer (Wilco) and Greg Archilla (Collective Soul, Matchbox 20). Alex’s unique style of guitar playing has earned him compliments from music greats such as Tommy Sims (Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt). He has played on many sessions, most recently David Archuleta’s (American Idol) upcoming release.

Alex’s writing is warm and vulnerable. Even when dealing with the difficulties of life and love, Alex's lush melodies and achingly romantic lyrics remain sunny and optimistic, meandering through musical subtleties at once hopeful and melancholic.

Alex was born in Bulgaria, where his father, Alexander Petrounov started The Silver Bracelets, Bulgaria's first rock band. "My dad took me with him on tour when I was young," the younger Petrounov recalls, "and that's probably where it all started."

When Alex was 14 his father gave him a guitar; he began writing songs and taught himself to play bass and drums as well. "I'd been writing stories in my head for years," Alex says. "Music finally gave me an outlet for integrating poetry, melody, harmony and rhythm into something that I hope will speak to people."

Alex continues to write, produce, and play prolifically.

Sessions: Vetiver

“It’s always slightly confounding to me whenever Vetiver is depicted with the same tropes that people have read off of press sheets,” says Andy Cabic. “The same sort of milestones get mentioned but then no one really digs to find out that there are those other things going on.”

Behind The Song: “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell sang, it has been remarked, like lovers, although they weren’t. Similarly, Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, the team behind one of Marvin and Tammi’s most enduring hits, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing,” wrote as if under the influence of amatory forces; even if, in the spring of 1968,

Spoon: The Power of Transference

In 1995, Spoon were often dubbed “the next Pixies.” The tag never quite fit, but the two did share a love for writing glorious pop songs and then shrouding them with walls of noise and mystery. Over 15 years, the Austin, Texas band have survived lineup shuffles and early record label neglect, finding their signature style with 2001’s Girls Can Tell and quietly building one of the strongest rock catalogs of the decade.

On Track: Josh Turner

“It’s pretty secluded and private out here,” he says of the homestead he shares with wife, Jennifer, and their two boys, Hampton, three years old, and Colby, just seven months.
